The Rotary club of Tamale District 9100 in collaboration with the Rotary Clubs of Vieux
Montreal, Oakville West, Oakville, Oakville Trafalgar, Oakville North, Westmount,
Tupelo and Oxford all from District 7040/7080 in Canada -- with technical assistance
from CUSO -- have mechanized four boreholes at a cost of US$100,000.00 to provide
access to potable water for the people of Damongo in the West Gonja District of the
Northern Region.

In a commissioning ceremony, the vice president of the Rotary Club, Tamale Mr.
Eddie Telly, said the Clubs were aware of the perennial water shortage in the
Damongo township in the dry season and the plight of people of Damongo in the
media and appeals to Rotary by the people and the District Assembly.

Hence the Rotary Clubs, with matching grants from Rotary International, collaborated
with the West Gonja District Assembly to improve access to potable water in
Damongo. He stated that the project -- which sought to assist in eradicating guinea
worm and other water borne diseases -- was in line with Rotary's desire is to make
potable water available and at a reasonable distance.

He noted that through his Club, Rotary has provided over $1,000,000 since 2000 for
the provision of portable water to various communities in the Northern Region. He
was equally  hopeful that the facility, which involved the mechanisation of four
boreholes, the digging and piping of water to two 1000 litre tanks located about one
kilometer from the boreholes, would help reduce the distance travelled by women and
children to collect water and in general improve the water situation in Damongo.

Finally, he implored the Water and Sanitation Committee and the West Gonja District
Assembly to ensure the sustainable use of the facilities provided.

On her part, the District Chief Executive for the West Gonja District Assembly, Hon.
Jambia Alhassan, noted that water is life and that any intervention geared towards
improving access to potable water in Damongo -- and indeed the West Gonja District
-- would be supported wholeheartedly by the District Assembly. She then assured the
sponsors of the facility that the District Assembly would take good care of the facilities
to enable the people derive maximum benefit from them.

The ceremony was chaired by the Chief of Damongo, who expressed the great
happiness and gratitude of his people to Rotary. It was witnessed by the Assembly
persons from the area and beneficiary community members. The facilities were jointly
commissioned by the DCE, the chief and the Vice president of the Rotary Club of
Tamale.
